Many items of clothing that we wear today have been around for centuries, and once such item is the trench coat. Men were the first to wear them and it was many years before the woman’s version was created.
It was actually during the middle of the 19th Century that a tailor decided to create a gent’s coat that would be waterproof and much more lightweight than most other full length coats of that period.
The end result was quickly snapped up by the higher ranks of the British Army, and it was called the trench coat. Men were delighted that they no longer had to be weighed down by the heavy top coat, but were still protected from the bad weather. Indeed, during the First and Second World War many soldiers were protected from the wind and rain by the trenchcoat.
Men returning from war hung on to their coats and they soon became a part of everyday wear. As time went on, more and more people were rejecting heavier wool men’s coats in favor of the trench coat men all over the world were buying them. Soon they became popular with women too.
The long trench coat became a fashion accessory for both men and women somewhere around the 1940’s to 50’s. Around the same time they were also worn by the ‘hero’ of many a movie, who wanted to give an air of importance and sophistication.
Within a few years not only the hero of a movie donned a mens trench coat, but many villains wore them too. Rather than this ruining its image the younger generation began to wear them, sales went up, and designers realized the benefits of continually updating its image.
Each decade has brought with it a new and updated version of the trench coat men trench coats to suit all ages. From the long black trench coat to the short trenchcoat jackets, every taste has been catered for.
In the days of ‘Mods and Rockers’ many ‘Mods’ wore them. Later, ‘Heavy Metal’ music followers favored leather trench coats, as did the ‘Goths’. They were now being adopted as a ‘Tag’ to signify an allegiance to one group or another.
Today anyone can look good in a trench coat. Men can go for the traditional style or have the ‘up to the minute’ look, and the Allegri, the Ben Sherman, the Burberry trench coat, and the London Fog trench coat are some of the most popular.
Movie stars, TV personalities, Music legends, Politicians, etc. are frequently photographed sporting their favorite men trenchcoats.
The original designs were for a tan, black, khaki, or green trenchcoat, which was always very long. However the short trenchcoat is now very popular not only in those traditional colors, but also in more vibrant shades.
It was probably for totally practical reasons that a tailor had the brilliant idea to invent the trench coat. Men and women around the globe, well over 150 years later, are very glad that he did.
